AN EXPERT GUIDE ON AT-HOME FACE AND SCALP MASSAGES

Take a look on TikTok and you’ll see skin care content creators unveiling sculpted, glowing looks with the help of hi-tech devices. Want those results yourself but have no time for a spa trip? A DIY massage with  an accompanying tool can add an extra element of self care to your skin and hair care routine. Let's face it, that’s always a welcome addition in today’s world! 

Not sure where to start? Fret not. We chat to co-founder and CEO of NuFACE, Tera Peterson, and the experts atISAMAYA for their top tips and product recommendations for at-home face and scalp massages.

HOW TO DO AN AT-HOME FACE AND SCALP MASSAGE 

 

What are the benefits of facial massage exercises?  

“When practiced correctly, facial massage can reap tremendous benefits for the skin, including improving circulation and lymphatic drainage, reducing tension, alleviating puffiness and enhancing product absorption,” says Tera. “Using microcurrents with your facial massage can help to tone and sculpt the facial muscles, reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, reduce puffiness and rejuvenate skin.”The experts at ISAMAYA agree. “Massage is important to enhance tension release and address scalp care. Which device would you recommend for an at-home facial massage?  

“We would recommend the NuFACE MINI+ Starter Kit or the NuFACE TRINITY+ Starter Kit,” says Tera. “These microcurrent devices send low-level electrical currents to stimulate the skin and facial muscles – think of it like a workout for your face! Apply a serum and use gentle pressure to glide the device upwards and outwards on the face and neck. This will give skin a gentle massage while toning the skin, sculpting facial muscles and smoothing the look of fine lines and wrinkles,” she adds. 

“The Face + Scalp Tool offers multiple features to target different areas of the face and scalp,” the experts at ISAMAYA reveal. “The comb can be used on the neck to stimulate the lymphatic system, whichassists in the draining of lactic acid and built-up toxins, while the long, curved edge is perfect for defining the contours of the face. Another use for the comb is alleviating scalp tightness andcontributing to overall scalp and hair health.” 

Which serums would you recommend using with your tool or device? 

“It’s important to always use a serum with your facial massage to avoid harsh rubbing or pulling of the skin, which can cause damage and irritation. Some people opt for face oils when performing a facial massage – but be sure to thoroughly cleanse the skin of any oil-based products before doing microcurrent treatments, as oil may impede the flow of microcurrents to the skin and facial muscles,” advises Tera.

How can we reap the most rewards from our tool or device? 

“Facial massage doesn’t have to be complicated, and using a microcurrent device can help you to see real results in a fraction of the time. Of course, you can always massage using your fingertips, a gua sha, or facial rollers – but these only provide a mechanical massage, and don’t go deeper to the muscle like microcurrents can,” comments Tera. That being said, whichever tool you choose (microcurrent or not), you can still achieve plenty of benefits depending on your desired results. 

“As with most good habits, consistency is key with microcurrent treatments,” she continues. “We always recommend using your NuFACE device for five minutes a day, five days a week for the first 60 days. Five minutes is all you need to give yourself a facial massage while effectively toning and sculpting the face and neck. After 60 days, you can decrease to using your device 2-3 times a week for five minutes at a time to maintain your results.” 

What's the ideal skin care routine prior to beginning a facial massage? 

“For a full facial massage routine, I always start by cleansing and exfoliating with the NuFACE Prep-N-Glow Facial Towlettes, which gently buff away dead skin cells and remove make up, which is vital before a facial massage. If your skin isn’t clean, you can actually push bacteria and debris further into pores during a facial massage, which can cause breakouts,” says Tera. 

“After cleansing, I apply either the NuFACE Firming + Radiant Super Peptide Booster Serum or theNuFACE Protect + Tighten Super Antioxidant Booster Serumto help firm skin and protect from free radical damage. Then, as my last step, I apply a mask-like layer of the NuFACE Hydrating Aqua Gel to give the skin a nice slick surface to glide the device on.”
