When you first light your candle, allow the flame to burn until the surface wax becomes molten and pools, leaving only a thin ring of solid wax around the inner edge of the vessel. Doing this sets the wax's memory and prolongs the lifespan of the candle, helping it to burn evenly. Once the flame is extinguished, straighten and re-centre the wick, which will also help the candle to burn at an even surface. To prevent the flame from smoking or getting too high, allow the wax to harden and trim the wick so it's between 3 and 5mm long.
